THE QUICK ANSWER
A sticking or restricted EGR valve can be associated with rough idle, hesitation, reduced power or an engine management light. These symptoms overlap with other faults. The warning and any stored codes need to be assessed alongside the actual vehicle condition.
Uneven idle
One possible EGR-related sign, but not a diagnosis.
Hesitation or flat response
Consider the wider intake, airflow and engine-control system.
An EGR-flow code
A useful starting point for investigation, not proof of a failed valve.
What is the EGR system doing?
EGR stands for exhaust gas recirculation. It controls the return of some exhaust gas to the intake as part of the engine’s emissions strategy.
Deposits can restrict movement or prevent a valve closing correctly. Related airflow measurement and control issues can also affect the way the system behaves.
What do P0401 and P0402 mean?
A professional checks the valve, its operation and related readings together. The appropriate checks depend on the exact engine.
| Code | General meaning | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| P0401 | EGR flow too low | That the valve alone is responsible |
| P0402 | EGR flow too high | That replacing one part will solve the cause |
Contact Hyperion about your symptoms
- Note whether the issue happens at idle, under load, when cold or when warm.
- Photograph the warning light or full dashboard message and keep any fault codes or diagnostic report.
- Send Hyperion Performance the photos, your make, model, year and engine, plus a description of the symptoms. We’ll discuss the available options and what needs checking before any remap work.
Where does an EGR delete fit?
For a supported motorsport or off-road vehicle, an EGR delete remap disables the EGR function in the ECU. Hardware requirements are checked separately. It is not a public-road repair option.
A leaking cooler or damaged valve still needs mechanical assessment. Hyperion’s remap and delete prices do not include mechanical work.
Common questions
Can I diagnose an EGR valve from rough idle alone?
No. Rough idle has several possible causes. The vehicle needs checks that establish the cause rather than a parts guess.
Will an EGR delete fix a coolant leak?
No. A physical leak needs professional mechanical diagnosis and repair.
